Definition:
A set of rules or instructions used by search engines or social media platforms to rank and display content.
Example:
When a user enters a search query, the search engine first retrieves all the web pages that contain the keywords in the query. Then, it applies a set of rules to these pages to determine their relevance and importance to the query. These rules may include factors such as the presence of the keywords in the page title, the number of times the keywords appear in the page content, and the number and quality of other web pages that link to the page.
Based on these rules, the search engine assigns a relevance score to each page and ranks the pages in order of their relevance scores. The pages with the highest relevance scores are displayed at the top of the search results page, while the pages with lower relevance scores are displayed further down the page or on subsequent pages.
